If you’ve ever searched for “the best AI tools for web designers,” you’ve probably noticed that every article seems to recommend the same handful of tools. Most of them feel like they’ve been copied from one another, with little or no real-world experience behind the recommendations.
The truth is, there are hundreds of AI tools available today. New ones are launched almost every week, and existing ones continue to add new features. It can be overwhelming trying to figure out which ones are genuinely worth your time and which ones are simply riding the AI wave.
Over the past couple of months, I’ve spent some time experimenting with different AI tools, reading reviews, watching demonstrations, and testing how they fit into my own workflow, and one thing I’ve observed is that when it comes to brainstorming, organizing ideas, generating starting points, or speeding up production, AI has become incredibly valuable.
These are the tools and workflows I believe are genuinely useful for different website design activities.
- Research, Planning, and Content Organization
Every successful website begins with extensive research and content planning. Before choosing colors or fonts, you try to understand the client’s business, organize their content, identify their audience, and map out how visitors should move through the website.
This used to involve hours of note-taking, outlining pages, and staring at blank documents wondering where to start. Now AI can help you get past that blank-page stage much faster. Tools like ChatGPT or Claude can help you:
- Organize messy client notes into something structured
- Brainstorm page ideas you have in mind
- Create first drafts of headlines and page copy
- Develop FAQs
- Suggest calls-to-action
- Build content outlines before writing begins
Notice I said first drafts, not to copy and paste AI-generated content directly onto a client’s website. AI can help you improve what you have, help you rewrite etc and that alone saves hours on every project. However, it shouldn’t take over your thinking and reasoning ability.
- Generating Layout Ideas
Sometimes you already know what a page needs to contain, but you’re not completely sure how to arrange everything. Rather than opening a blank file and starting from scratch, AI can generate several layout concepts within minutes. Some of the tools worth exploring include:
- Relume for generating sitemaps and wireframes
- Galileo AI for generating interface concepts
- Uizard for turning ideas into editable UI designs
Now you need to understand that these tools don’t create perfect designs as it were, instead, they help you create a starting point that you can then apply your creativity and experience to improve. That’s definitely a much better use of your time.
- Creating Better Visuals
Finding the right imagery has always been one of the slower parts of web design, especially when the business has no professional image they can put on their website. Sometimes, you search through hundreds of stock photos, looking for images that communicate the feel you’re trying to create.
With AI image generation, that struggle has come to an end. All you need to do is prompt AI with what you intend to communicate and in less than a minute, it generates your image for you. Midjourney and Gemini remain two of my favorites because they consistently produce high-quality concepts and images.
- Building Websites Faster
This particular point sounds threatening but it doesn’t have to be. Today there are AI tools that can generate an entire website from a simple prompt.
Platforms like Framer AI, Wix AI, and several modern website builders can produce surprisingly decent websites within minutes, and that’s genuinely impressive.
Here’s a positive way to look at it, if someone simply needs an online presence as quickly as possible and they’re on a tight budget, these tools can absolutely help you create something that works for them.
However, if the goal is to build a website that reflects a unique brand, guides visitors through a thoughtful user journey, and encourages meaningful conversions, AI still isn’t enough on its own.
Still, it’s important for web designers to explore these tools, because many of your future clients will probably experiment with them before they contact you, and understanding what these tools can and can’t do makes it much easier to explain the value of custom design.
AI can become a permanent part of your workflow, but probably not in the way you think or imagine. It isn’t there to take the job of design away from you, it’s there to help you think faster, research quicker, organize ideas, and overcome creative blocks.
If you’re just getting started with exploring AI, don’t feel like you need to sign up for every AI tool you come across. Just choose 3-4 from the recommended tools and master how to use it to get maximum benefit from it.
